GPPAThought Leadership
As data centers consume an ever-growing share of global electricity, the industry lacks a standardized metric to benchmark energy efficiency relative to computational output. The Compute Heat Rate (CHR) framework addresses this gap — offering a universal language for evaluating the true energy cost of compute.
Inspired by the power generation industry's heat rate metric, CHR provides data center operators, investors, and energy buyers with a comparable, actionable benchmark that goes beyond traditional PUE to capture the full picture of compute efficiency.
Supply Chain Decarbonization Programs
Hans created the supply chain renewables model at Schneider Electric — a framework now deployed across industries worldwide, engaging 2,700+ suppliers and facilitating 2 TWh of renewable electricity.
Originally built for pharmaceuticals, now a healthcare-wide initiative with 25 corporate sponsors including UnitedHealth Group. Teva and Sandoz signed new PPAs through the program.
Decarbonizing the semiconductor value chain with 9 sponsors including Intel, Applied Materials, and KLA. Multi-buyer cohorts across the US, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.
Launched November 2025 to accelerate renewable electricity across M&S's global fashion supply chain. Powered by Zeigo Hub across five key regions.
Expanding renewable energy access across Levi's supply chain, starting in India. Targeting 42% supply chain emissions reduction by 2030.
Landed the first supplier/PepsiCo cohort VPPA in the US, now expanding to additional value chain cohorts in several global markets.
The Gigaton PPA program — accelerating renewable energy adoption among Walmart's US-based suppliers through aggregate purchasing power.

Full Bio
As Senior Director of Renewable Energy and Carbon Advisory (RECA), Hans Royal leads Schneider Electric's Client Development team, specializing in strategic renewable energy advisory for Fortune 500 clients. His team works with large corporate and industrial companies focused on renewable energy strategy, offsite PPAs, supply chain/scope 3 renewables acceleration, tax credit investments, and renewable energy project finance.
Hans is a subject matter expert in utility-scale PPAs, tax credit investing, project development and finance, risk management, supply chain renewables, and corporate energy strategy. He has helped lead Schneider Electric's commercial efforts to become the dominant, market-leading advisor in the corporate PPA market — ranked #1 by Guidehouse in 2025 — with hundreds of individual PPA transactions resulting in over 25,000 MW of new wind and solar being installed globally.
Hans created Schneider's Supply Chain Renewables Initiative (SCRI) — now called Supply Chain Decarbonization - Renewables (SCDR) — the intrapreneurial model that has been deployed across industries worldwide. Programs born from this framework include Energize (healthcare, 25 sponsors), Catalyze (semiconductors, 9 sponsors including Intel and Applied Materials), RE:SPARK (Marks & Spencer), LEAP (Levi Strauss), pep+ REnew (PepsiCo), and the Gigaton PPA program (Walmart). Collectively, these programs have engaged 2,700+ suppliers across 50+ brands, facilitating 2 TWh of renewable electricity procurement.
Hans also designed and launched Schneider's Tax Credit Advisory team, which has facilitated $1.7 billion in tax credit transfer transactions since 2023. He was a lead advisor on Schneider's groundbreaking Tax Credit Transfer deal with ENGIE in February 2024 — a first-of-its-kind structure that reinvested tax savings into renewable energy credits, effectively making Schneider a development partner in ENGIE's solar and battery projects.
In the wake of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), signed into law July 4, 2025, Hans has been at the forefront of advising corporate clients on navigating the new tax credit landscape, authoring thought leadership on construction timeline implications and helping buyers secure remaining credits before phaseout deadlines.
Hans is also the creator of the Compute Heat Rate™ (CHR) framework, a new benchmarking methodology for evaluating data center energy efficiency relative to computational output. As AI and high-performance computing drive exponential growth in data center energy demand, CHR provides a standardized metric that goes beyond traditional PUE to capture the true energy cost of compute.
Hans brings more than 18 years of experience in the renewable energy industry, holding various leadership positions focused on business development, renewable energy project finance, and corporate renewables strategy. He helped grow Renewable Choice's PPA advisory group from its infancy through the acquisition by Schneider Electric and now to the world's leading corporate PPA advisor. He frequently speaks at renewables industry events, including Smart Energy Decisions, Trellis (formerly GreenBiz), Verge, Clean Energy Buyers Alliance (CEBA), Infocast, and others.
Hans holds a double-major from Millikin University with a BS in Business and a BA in Music, and a BBA in International Business from École Supérieure de Gestion (Paris School of Business) in Paris, France. He was born in Stuttgart, Germany and is fluent in German and English, with conversational French.
Hans lives in Louisville, Colorado with his dog Morty and cat Gremlin. In his free time, you can find him hiking the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and playing pickleball.
